Whirlwind

Touchscreen, Dial

Created at Bluecadet. Designed by Kim Gim & Morgan Foust.

On display in the MIT Museum, this touch screen experience showcases the step-by-step process of programming Whirlwind – a computer operated circa 1951 – by highlighting stories from Whirlwind's team and simulating a Bouncing Ball program. Tapping on a step shows an image gallery and content further explaining the process.

Turning a physical dial next to the screen reveals additional information about the program and lets users change the frequency of the ball in the simulation. The ring around the dial consists of LEDs that display different lighting states depending on where visitors are in the experience.
